Flexibility
Kalari’s deep stretches, high kicks, and low stances gradually open the hips, hamstrings, spine, and shoulders. Students become supple without forcing the body.
Learn traditional Thekkan Kalari, the southern style of Kerala’s ancient martial art, under Mahesh Gurukkal at Sree Rudra Kalari. Training is taught the traditional guru–shishya way, for children from age 7 and adults of any age.
Kalari trains the whole person: body, mind, and character. Regular practice brings:
Kalari’s deep stretches, high kicks, and low stances gradually open the hips, hamstrings, spine, and shoulders. Students become supple without forcing the body.
An hour of kalari is a full-body workout that combines strength, stamina, and cardio. Practised regularly with sensible eating, it helps burn fat, tone muscles, and build lasting fitness, without machines or a gym.
Bodyweight conditioning, stances, and weapon practice build core strength, strong legs, and the endurance to keep moving.
Footwork patterns (Chuvadu), turns, jumps, and quick changes of direction train the body to move fast, light, and balanced.
Stick and weapon work, blocking and striking with a partner, and precise hand techniques sharpen hand–eye coordination, reflexes, timing, and control of the hands and fingers. This is especially valuable for growing children.
Kalari is a complete fighting art. Students learn to block, strike, escape holds, and protect themselves, and gain the calm confidence to avoid trouble in the first place. Women and girls are welcome.
From the first salutation to the gurus, kalari teaches respect, patience, regular practice, and concentration. Parents often notice better focus and behaviour at home and in school.
Correct stances and breath-linked movement strengthen the back and core, improving posture for students who sit long hours at desks or screens.
Kalari is often called meditation in movement. Training releases stress, builds self-belief, and teaches students to stay calm under pressure.
Kalari gives children an active alternative to screens. It builds flexibility, coordination, fine motor skills, concentration, and confidence, and teaches respect for teachers and elders. Classes are guided carefully by the Gurukkal according to each child’s age and ability.
It is never too late to start. Adults join for fitness and weight loss, flexibility, stress relief, self-defence, or to learn Kerala’s living heritage. Each student progresses at their own pace.
Training follows the traditional order. Each stage builds on the one before, and students move forward when the Gurukkal judges they are ready.
Kalari Vandanam and discipline. Students begin with the salutation to the kalari and the gurus, and the conduct expected inside the kalari.
Body conditioning (Meipayirchi). Stretches, kicks, and exercises build flexibility, strength, and stamina.
Chuvadu (footwork). Stepping patterns such as Ottachuvadu and Kaichuvadu form the base of every technique.
Adithada (strike and block). These are empty-hand techniques: blocks (thada), strikes, punches, kicks, and counters, practised alone and with partners.
Pidi (locks and holds). Students learn joint locks, holds, throws, and escapes.
Weapons. Students train in the full range of traditional weapons:
Varma/Marma knowledge. Advanced students study the vital points, their effects, and revival methods (Ilakku Murai). This is taught only to senior students, at the Gurukkal’s discretion.
